It’s hard to make a drive playing the 18th hole of the Hills Golf Club in Arrowtown, New Zealand, under such distracting circumstances. The elevated tee of this former deer farm must be one of the finest spots in all of golfdom; every breath is a deep draft of mountain creek purity. The Remarkables mountain range – used in the shooting of the Lord of the Rings trilogy – is background and foreground, and peaks jut like blades straight out of the earth’s core.
